Norton 2006 Firewall configuration

Question:

How do I configure Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall for use with Network Magic?

(For Norton 2007 click here)

(For Norton 360 click here)

Answer:

1. The first part of setting Norton Internet Security or Personal firewall for use with Network Magic is to provide the appropriate responses to the prompts during the Network Magic Installation process.

When Network Magic reaches the "Finish" dialog at the end of installation you'll see the first of two prompts from the Norton Personal Firewall (shown below.) On the dropdown menu under "What do you want to do?" select "Always allow connections to this program on all ports" and then click the "OK" button.

The prompt will disappear and you'll again see the final dialog of the Network Magic installer. Click the "Finish" button.

2. You'll also need to configure Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall to trust local traffic coming through your router. Your router's default settings will protect these ports so that they cannot be accessed from the internet.

These steps will help you configure the Norton Firewall to allow all traffic between the PCs on your home network:

4. Now click on the "Networking" tab

5. Click on the "Wizard" button near the bottom of the window

6. On the following three screens, click the "Next" button

7. Click the "Finish" button at the end of the wizard

8. Click the "OK" button

9. Close the Norton interface

3. If you chose to "Block All" when you encountered the prompts shown in step one above, you'll need to correct those settings as shown in the following steps.

Short video of the steps described below.
(opens in browser. no plugins needed.)

1. Open the Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall interface by right-clicking on its icon in the system tray near the clock in the lower-right of your screen.

2. Next click on "Personal Firewall"

3. Next click the "Configure" button

4. Next click on the "Programs" tab

5. Next scroll through the list of programs to find "nmsrvc" and "Pure Networks Router Service"

6. Next Click in the "Internet Access" column for the "nmsrvc" entry and set it to "Permit All"

7. When done, click the "OK" button, then close the window

8. Now return to Network Magic and click the "Repair" button

4. If problems remain after applying the above instructions to each computer on your network, then you may need to go a step further and configure a specific range of IP addresses on which to allow all traffic, specifically the range of IP addresses assigned by your router to computers and devices on your network.

1. First, find out the IP range your router is using by going to the network map in Network Magic and clicking on the icon for the router or one of the computers, then look under details for "IP address" (not "Internet IP address" just "IP address.) Write down the first 3 sections of the IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.xxx)

2. Next bring up Norton by double-clicking on its icon on the system tray near the clock in the lower-right hand corner.

3. Click on "Status & Settings" in the left hand column

4. Click on "Personal Firewall"

5. Click the "Configure" button in the lower-right.

6. Next click on the "Networking" tab

7. Click the "Add" button

8. Choose "Using a Range"

9. For the first of the IP addresses in the range for your router, enter, for example 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.0.0 or 10.0.0.0, depending on what you wrote down when viewing details on the network map.

10. For the last of the IP addresses in the range, enter, for example 192.168.1.255 or 192.168.0.255 or 10.0.0.255

11. Save your changes. Repeat these steps on each computer which has Norton installed.

12. If you get an error than one of the IP addresses is already included in an existing rule, delete the existing rule and try again.
